Young and old in each other’s good books

Reading between generations has put Haxby Road Primary Academy children and residents from a nearby care home in each other’s good books.

Every Thursday since September, children have been visiting Minster Grange Care Home to read to many of the 83 residents.

“One of our main priorities as a school is reading and we thought it would be a really nice way to mix this with getting to know our local community,” said Katie Scull, a teacher from Haxby Road Primary Academy. “Children come down and share their favourite books with the residents here and it’s lovely to see them really enjoying each other’s company.

“It makes me feel so proud and the children are so friendly with the residents.”

Alison Redhead, manager of the home, said the visit is a highlight of their residents’ week. “Our residents love it and say how nice it is to see the young people. It’s heart-warming to see them all get on so well. We’re really keen to build these relationships.”

For Christmas, instead of reading the children sang carols and then pulled crackers with the residents. Father Christmas made a surprise appearance.
